In today's challenging business climate, many employers are faced with the need to have their employees be capable of performing new or multiple job functions. As personnel shift to accommodate business needs, it is essential to have staff understand the importance of safety and health management and the underlying effect it has on business. In three days, this fundamentals course offers the resources and tools to create or enhance an effective safety and health management system, a review of the MIOSHA Act, and highlights of many key General Industry Safety and Health Standards.

Topics include elements of a comprehensive safety and health system, recordkeeping, accident investigations, inspections and citations, written program requirements, introduction to industrial hygiene, respiratory protection, hearing conservation, bloodborne infectious diseases (BIDs), eyewash and first aid requirements, ergonomics, hazard recognition, and machine guarding.

Chris Johnson

Chris Johnson is an Occupational Safety Consultant with the Consultation Education and Training Division of MIOSHA. Chris currently provides consultation and training services for Southwest Michigan counties.

Before working with the State of Michigan, Chris was a Safety Chair at a MVPP STAR manufacturing facility in West Michigan. His responsibilities included incident investigation, safety training, employee engagement, and developing and working with different employee lead safety teams in order to enhance the safety culture. Chris also has previous experience in the insurance industry, working with accident and liability investigations.

Chris is a graduate of Lake Superior State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Fire Science and is a licensed fire fighter and emergency medical technician in the State of Michigan.

Anthony Smykla

Anthony Smykla joined the CET Division on November 20, 2017. Anthony serves
as an Industrial Hygienist in the Training and Consultation Program in four lower
Michigan counties: Monroe, Lenawee, Washtenaw, and Wayne. He provides
occupational health consultation and advice to business, industry, construction,
unions, employee groups, schools, colleges, municipalities, counties, and state
agencies.
Anthony comes from private industry as an employee of Bureau Veritas of North
America working as Industrial Hygiene Manager with full responsibility for all of the
Detroit Region’s Industrial Hygiene Services of his firm. He was responsible for the
coordination of industrial hygiene services for some of his firm’s largest clientele.
Anthony holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and a Master’s Degree in Industrial
Hygiene and Toxicology. He also holds a Juris Doctorate in Law and is a licensed
attorney.

Deborah Ziel

Deborah Ziel is a Senior Occupational Safety Consultant who joined the Consultation Education and Training Division of MIOSHA in 2006. Before that, she had over a decade of safety and health experience in private industry. Deborah currently provides consultation and training services for mid-west Michigan.

Prior to working for the State of Michigan, Deborah was an EHS Specialist in aeronautics manufacturing facilities performing safety and health functions in two Michigan Voluntary Protection Program (MVPP) STAR sites. Deborah is a graduate of Grand Valley State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Safety & Health. Deb has a Certified Occupational Safety Specialist (C.O.S.S) designation.
