Course Description

This workshop meets the Michigan LARA Licensure requirement for Ethics.

This training is designed to equip school social workers with the knowledge, skills, and strategies necessary to navigate ethical dilemmas that arise in their professional practice. School social workers often face complex situations where ethical principles and practical realities intersect, requiring careful consideration and sound judgment.

Course Level: Beginner

Objectives:

  1. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of key ethical principles and standards relevant to school social work, including but not limited to confidentiality, professional boundaries, and duty of care.
  2. Participants will analyze and discuss various case studies and real-life scenarios to identify ethical dilemmas commonly encountered in school social work practice.
  3. Participants will enhance their critical thinking and ethical reasoning skills in their practice by applying ethical principles and frameworks to hypothetical situations.
  4. Participants will increase their awareness and sensitivity to ethical issues and dilemmas in school social work, recognizing the impact of personal values, cultural factors, and professional standards on ethical decision-making.
  5. Participants will learn how to apply ethical standards and guidelines to their everyday practice in school settings, ensuring ethical integrity and best practices in their interactions with students, families, and school staff.

Instructor

Dr. Glenda Bailey Hayden, D.Min. LMSW-CM

Dr. Glenda Bailey Hayden is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, and a distinguished graduate of Dillard University of New Orleans, Michigan State University, and Grand Valley State University. She serves as a School Social Worker with Grand Rapids Public Schools, where she has held the position of Lead School Social Worker and coordinated professional development training for her colleagues. Currently, she is one of the Nonviolent Crisis Prevention Intervention Trainers.

Dr. Hayden holds a Master’s Degree in Clinical Child and Family Psychology, a Master of Social Work, and a Doctorate of Ministry in Christian Counseling. She has also served as an Adjunct Professor at Grand Valley State University and contributed to the GVSU School of Social Work Committee, where she played a key role in revising the School Social Work curriculum. In addition to her academic and professional accomplishments, Dr. Hayden is an author and the Principal of Exousia Transformation Space, LLC, an organization dedicated to empowering families to transform from ordinary to Kingdomstronary. In her personal life, Dr. Hayden enjoys dancing, reading, creating, and traveling abroad with her two young adult children.


Anjalon Wimbush, LMSW-CM

Anjalon Wimbush is a licensed Masters level social worker who has a career as a School Social Worker for the past 24 years. She is a graduate of Western Michigan University. Anjalon serves as a Field Instructor for Michigan State University for over 17 years, also assists on MSU’s School of Social Work Field Advisory Council and was recognized in 2017 with an Excellence award as Field Instructor of the Year. Anjalon has recently joined the GVSU TRIO Upward Bound team as the Social-Emotional Learning Instructor. In the past 4 years, Anjalon has been trained in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, Social-Emotional Learning Facilitation for all ages, and Compassion Resilience. In addition, she is CEO of Positive Steps10, LLC, owner and Life Coach at The Lotus Life Self-Care Coaching program, podcast host, and an author. Anjalon enjoys music, crafts, and she is committed to spending time with her family and friends.
