Course Description

Exposure to bloodborne infectious diseases is identified as a significant source of occupational illness. The lack of first aid and medical services can lead to serious physical harm or death. This full day course was developed to teach participants: the requirements of Part 472, Medical Services and First Aid, and Part 554, Bloodborne Infectious Diseases; to determine if facilities and employees are covered by the standards; to prepare a written exposure control plan; and, to ensure employees receive proper care following an occupational exposure or injury. This course is designed for general industry with emphasis for healthcare facilities.

By the end of the course attendees will:

  • Determine the applicability of Part 554 Bloodborne Infectious.
  • Diseases standards to specific personnel and facilities.
  • Evaluate written exposure control plan.
  • Identify proper engineering, work practices, and personal protective equipment controls to reduce and eliminate exposure.
  • Implement a program for proper management, decontamination, and disposal of contaminated materials.
  • Evaluate availability and accessibility of exposed and injured employees to first aid and medical services.

Instructor

Keith Langworthy

Keith started his career with MIOSHA's Asbestos Program May 1, 2000. Prior stints as a Dow Chemical Intern and Industrial Hygiene Technician at DeLisle Associates in Kalamazoo offered Keith a good look at IH work in large industrial facilities in Michigan. Since 2008, he's been a MIOSHA Senior Industrial Hygienist. While in the Asbestos Program, he conducted enforcement inspections throughout the state for the first 10 years of his career. In 2011, Keith took on expanded responsibilities with a transfer to MIOSHA's Construction Safety and Health Division and continued conducting enforcement inspections of all health hazards in a position covering the West side of the State. Keith's most memorable worksites include the World Trade Center Clean-up operation in Jan-Feb 2002, working alongside OSHA Industrial Hygienists as a part of the Hurricane Katrina response efforts in November 2005, and covering SW Michigan's employees responding to the Enbridge Oil Spill cleanup in 2010. Keith is currently the Co-Chair of MIOSHA's Disaster Response Team(DRT).

In October 2022, Keith came to MIOSHA CET's Training & Consulting Section as a Senior Industrial Hygienist covering the Western and Southwestern counties of the state.
