Course Description

This workshop includes 3 hours towards the Michigan LARA Licensure requirement for Ethics. This workshop was previously offered October 2023.

This workshop will examine the experience of being a social worker with mental health needs through an ethical framework including the social work code of ethics, state licensing requirements, and reducing risk of harm to the profession. This workshop takes an empathetic and realistic approach to the reality of being a social worker and the impact of trauma on the social worker themselves.

Course Level: Beginner

Objectives:

  1. Explore research related to social workers and suicidal ideation from 2000 to present.
  2. Identify 1-2 ethical considerations for seeking help as a social worker.
  3. Identify 1-2 avenues for support and help for suicidal ideation.

Instructor

Laurie Eldred, LMSW-C, CAADC, MPA

Laurie Eldred is a licensed clinical Master of Social Work and Certified Advanced Addiction Drug Counselor who has been in the social worker field since 2004. Laurie seeks to support other social workers struggling with boundaries, self-care and the reality of working in the social work field. Laurie has worked in a variety of social work positions including within the criminal justice system, child protective services, community mental health in both Ionia and Kent County as front line staff and a supervisor, substance abuse treatment, and medical social work. Laurie provides trainings for social workers in the area of self care, substance use, and secondary trauma for front line staff just to name a few. She also provides groups using EMDR-IGTP to address traumatic community incidents. In addition, she provides supervision for interns, new clinical social workers and seasoned social workers. Laurie is also a delegate for NASW Michigan, and volunteers to address criminal justice reform. During her free time, Laurie likes to spend time with her family, listen to true crime podcasts, hike, practice yoga, meditate and read a good book.
