Course Description

This workshop meets the Michigan LARA Licensure requirement for Ethics.

This workshop will focus on the unique ethical dilemmas faced by Social Workers who work with children and teenagers. The presenters will focus on disclosures of abuse from underage clients, navigating additional expectations of clients outside of contracted services and setting appropriate boundaries with caregivers.

Course Level: Intermediate

Objectives:

  1. Understand the role of Ethics in the current Social Work field
  2. Understand the nuances of Ethics when working with children/teens
  3. Understand Ethical concerns related to Telehealth
  4. Understand and manage underage disclosures from clients (how/when to report)
  5. Improve knowledge of navigating additional expectations of clients outside of contracted services
  6. Identify how to effectively engage and set boundaries with caregivers

Instructors

Sarah Zuidema

Sarah is a licensed social worker and has worked in the field for over 25 years. She is experienced in child welfare, international adoption, social services, complex trauma, child sexual abuse, policy, and supervision. Currently, Sarah is a therapist at Alliance Counseling Group and an adjunct Professor at GVSU.




Samantha Ackerman

Samantha has been an advocate for children and families in the social work field for over 15 years. She has been working with children and families experiencing trauma during her career and is currently providing TFCBT, EMDR, and Somatic processing. Samantha is the owner of Sage Pines Counseling and Wellness and is an adjunct Professor at GVSU.
