Course Description

This workshop meets the Michigan LARA Licensure requirement for Ethics and has been approved for MCBAP credit hours. This workshop was previously offered September 2023.

This course will provide an overview of issues surrounding professional ethics for Social Workers, Licensed Professional Counselors and Substance Use Disorder professionals. Topics include ethical decision making models, understanding professional versus personal ethics, understanding professional codes of ethics and resolving ethical dilemmas. The use of case study examples will be reviewed and discussed.

Course Level: Intermediate

Objectives:

  1. Understand fundamental principles of professional ethics
  2. Differentiate between personal and professional ethics
  3. Identify common boundary violations by clinicians
  4. Resolve ethical dilemmas and violations though case study examples
  5. Identify 42CFR and how it applies to SUD clinical practice
  6. Differentiate between HIPAA and 42CFR
  7. Review several Codes of Ethics and identify potential differences (APA, NBCC, NASW, ACA, MCBAP, etc)

Instructor

James Sherrill, MSC/MHC, LPC, CAADC, TF-CBT

James Sherrill has been a Licensed Professional Counselor, Course Instructor, Clinical and Professional Supervisor since 2010. He has worked with all ages including Adolescents with juvenile court involvement, residential services for adults with severe and persistent mental illness including several who were adjudicated not guilty by reason of insanity. He has been a clinician, case manager, and clinical supervisor.
