Objectives:
1. Become more familiar with LGBTQ+ culture and understand the importance of inclusion
2. Become an effective ally within your organization and community
3. Analyze and learn how to create policies within your organization to foster better inclusion

The purpose of this presentation is to offer a deeper understanding about the importance of diversity, inclusion, equality, equity, and justice for the LGBTQ community and how inequality impacts us all. The course will also provide you with knowledge and insight about gender, sexual orientation, the “coming out process”, how to become an ally and the stigma that significantly impacts the LGBTQ community and culture. You will walk away with deeper empathy, best practices, and tools to bring to your communities and organizations to make our world more inclusive for all.

Notes:

Payment & Registration (RECENTLY UPDATED):

  • Payment is due upon registration.  If a participant registers for a course and has not paid the registration fee, we will send a reminder email to pay the fee.  If there is no response and the fee has not been paid within 7 days, the participant will be dropped from the course and may re-register and pay if space is available.
    • This is a recent change in our policies to ensure equitable access to courses that have high demand and long waitlists.
  • Registration Deadline: Three days prior to the program by 5pm. 
  • Waitlist Policy: Our social work programs, excluding the DHHS programs, may fill up due to interest in the content. If the course becomes full, we will have a limited wait list. Those who get on a wait list for a course, you will be notified as soon as possible if a seat becomes available and payment must be made upon enrollment. When the typical registration period ends two days prior to the begin date, all those on the list will be notified we can no longer accept people into the class.

 

Cancellations:

  • Participants may cancel their registration at any time by calling our office at 616-331-7180 or emailing learn@gvsu.edu.  Participants seeking a refund must cancel their registration at least 48 hours prior to the program.  You may either receive a full refund back on your card, or we can place a credit on your account for a future program.  Refund requests received within 48 hours of the program are not eligible for a refund.  If GVSU needs to cancel the event, participants will receive a full refund.

 

Social Work Continuing Education Credits:

  • Participants seeking Social Work Continuing Education credits will need to arrive by the start time of the program, and must stay until the end.  Partial credit will not be awarded.
  • Participants must complete the post-event evaluation to receive SWCE credit.
  • Certificates will be emailed to participants 1-2 business days after the program.  Participants who have not received their certificate (and it is not in their spam/junk folder) should email learn@gvsu.edu.
  • Grand Valley State University School of Social Work, an accredited social work education program, is authorized by Administrative Rule 338.2965 to award Michigan social work continuing education contact hours.

Alexa Sorensen


Alexa Sorensen, LMSW, BCN, has over a decade of experience in the field of social work within the for-profit and non-profit sectors. She has a true passion for both the micro and macro blend within the field. Alexa has a wealth of experience which includes work in philanthropy, volunteer coordinating, professional mentorship and leadership, clinical therapy, advocacy and policy work, and neuro and bio feedback. Alexa is currently an adjunct professor at GVSU, teaching field seminar and the community work with LGBTQ+ classes for both MSW and BSW students. She also recently founded the new telehealth company, Reflective Psychological Servies, LLC. She serves on her alma mater alumni board for Finlandia University and plays ice hockey in her free time.

Jeffrey Sorensen


Jeffrey Sorensen is a leader in the west Michigan non-profit and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) fields. Currently, he is an assistant branch manager for Lake Michigan Credit Union, but most recently was the first executive director for Out On The Lakeshore, a Holland-based LGBTQ+ Center. In this role Jeffrey was instrumental in the city passing a comprehensive non-discrimination ordinance, earning him the City of Holland's 2020 Social Justice Award. He is a Grand Valley State University graduate with a degree in advertising and public relations and also earned a certificate in DEI in the Workplace through the University of Southern Florida. Jeffrey's work has been recognized in several local, regional, and national publications. He currently volunteers his time as a consultant for several non-profit organizations focused on DEI and LGBTQ+ advocacy.
