Ghana Deconstructed: Changing Our Perspectives, Understanding Cultures

Social Work professionals will examine the influence of colonial and post-colonial structures on Ghana, West Africa. They will be exposed to slave dungeons, learn of the initial purposes of these dungeons, learn of the changes in the political structure once independence was gained, and will be introduced to perspectives on repatriation. Individuals will observe and learn of social work ethics as related to human trafficking and challenges related to disabilities. They will provide an act of service at an organization that houses differently abled individuals. The group will engage in cultural excursions such as observing the bead making and kinte clothe processes, cocao farming, participate in a naming ceremony and join in a traditional dancing and drumming activity.

This program meets the ethics and pain management requirements for license renewal.

Registration with a $500 nonrefundable deposit due no later than October 15, 2019. Full balance due no later than November 15, 2019.

Lodging, breakfast, activities and transportation within country are included in the course fee of $2495 based on double occupancy, however, most meals, Visa costs, immunizations and airfare are NOT. Air fare should not be purchased until after the deposit deadline to insure we have the required amount of people to go on the trip. We will keep you informed throughout the registration process.

A mandatory pre-departure meeting will take place on November 2, from 10a - 2p in Grand Rapids and is included in your social work continuing education hours. Roommates will be determined during the orientation meeting. A surcharge of $500 will be added to the course fee for those wanting an individual, single room.


An orientation will take place on November 2 from 10a - 2p, at GVSU's DeVos Center, 401 Fulton St West, University Club, Grand Rapids. This will be part of your 45 hours and important overseas information will be discussed so attendance is required.
