Navigating Social Work Ethics: Practice and Technology in the Age of a Pandemic and Beyond
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, social workers were challenged to adapt quickly and utilize various forms of technology in their efforts to maintain safety and ensure social work services were not disrupted. Using an ethical lens, this course explores how the pandemic affected social work practice and considers how social workers can become involved in future developments of technology, ensuring ethical practice is maintained. This course reviews the NASW Code of Ethics, specifically the standards that relate to a social worker's use of technology and examines best practice when using technology through a series of case scenarios. Multiple decision-making frameworks are presented. In addition, teletherapy is discussed and various podcasts and training clips are used.
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will understand the NASW Code of Ethics standards related to social work practice and technology.
2. Participants will consider how the use of technology and social media may impact social work practice.
3. Participants will recognize how a health pandemic impacts social work ethics and practice.
4. Participants will gain knowledge to navigate remote social work practice and decrease risk of non-ethical behavior.
5. Participants will identify decision-making frameworks to apply when faced with ethical dilemmas.
**Learners are most successful when using a computer when completing this course. The course software does not work as intended on a phone or tablet.
**Once you have viewed all of the course content, you must pass a post-test with a score of 80% or higher to receive a social work continuing education certificate. Upon successful completion of the course and post-test, your social work continuing education certificate will be made available to download/print within Blackboard (our online course system).

Katie Scheuerle received her B.A. in Social Work from Hope College and her MSW degree from GVSU. Katie has worked for the GVSU School of Social Work since 2007 in various capacities. For the past 7 years, she has held the role of BSW Field Education Coordinator and more recently, she also serves as the Social Work Continuing Education Coordinator for GVSU. Katie enjoys mentoring and educating future social workers as well as staying current on important issues in the social work field.
Prior to coming to GVSU, Katie worked at the Children's Advocacy Center in Holland as a forensic interviewer for 7 years and supervised student interns.
Katie is active on the Kent County Pathways to Permanence Committee and the Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative for the State of Michigan.
